The Central Asian Institute for Environmental Research (CAIER) hosted a delegation from the Santa Fe Institute and the Xander Group, which included John Dana Chisholm – an entrepreneur, investor and member of the MIT Corporation – a member of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Board of Trustees from 2015 to 2021, a trustee of the Santa Fe Institute and an honorary director of the MIT Club of Northern California, which brings together the MIT community in Silicon Valley.
The meeting focused on discussing the prospects for international scientific and technological cooperation, developing research links, attracting cutting-edge technologies, and exploring opportunities for the commercialisation of scientific developments in the fields of ecology, sustainable development and natural resource management.
The delegation also included Iskander Akylbaev, Chief Executive Officer of Xander Group, and Sultan Yesenbek, Business Development Partner at Xander Group.
Representing CAIER at the meeting were the institute’s founder and Chief Executive Officer, Aselle Tasmagambetova; Managing Director Daulet Assylbaev; Director of Science and Innovation and Head of the Project Office, Almas Kulumbetov; Adylkhan Tovassarov; and Head of ESG Project Development, Assem Syrlybay.
During the meeting, the CAIER team presented the institute’s key areas of activity, its research infrastructure, ongoing environmental projects and international partnerships. Particular attention was paid to research in the fields of climate change, integrated water resources management, biodiversity conservation, environmental monitoring and the implementation of innovative solutions to address applied environmental challenges.
The guests were also given a tour of CAIER’s analytical laboratories and the institute’s state-of-the-art research equipment, including the capabilities of the high-precision QTOF mass spectrometry system, which is used to conduct comprehensive environmental studies.
Particular attention was paid to the practical application of scientific findings and the transition from research to technological solutions. The parties discussed opportunities for launching joint research and pilot projects, developing R&D partnerships, engaging international expertise and implementing technologies aimed at improving the quality of environmental monitoring, water resource management, biodiversity conservation and climate risk assessment.
Promising areas for cooperation included the modelling of complex environmental systems, integrated water resource management, the forecasting of climate and technological risks, and the development of collaboration with international scientific and innovation ecosystems, including MIT and the Santa Fe Institute.
During the meeting, John Dana Chisholm also presented CAIER’s founder and CEO, Asel Tasmagambetova, with a copy of his book *Unleash Your Inner Company*, which focuses on entrepreneurship, scaling up businesses and building sustainable companies.
The participants noted the significant potential of combining CAIER’s research base, the Santa Fe Institute’s international expertise and the Xander Group’s global partnership network. Such collaboration could help bring cutting-edge technologies, research expertise and practical solutions to Kazakhstan and Central Asia.
Following the meeting, the parties confirmed their mutual interest in further developing the dialogue and agreed to continue exploring possible avenues for a long-term strategic partnership.
This potential cooperation could represent an important step towards strengthening Kazakhstan’s role as a regional hub for environmental research, sustainable development, the commercialisation of science and the implementation of modern environmental technologies.
