A delegation from the British Embassy visited CAIER

A delegation from the British Embassy in the Republic of Kazakhstan, led by Tom Pearson, Head of Climate and Green Transition, visited the Central Asian Institute for Environmental Research (CAIER). During the visit, the British representatives familiarised themselves with the institute’s key areas of activity and discussed prospects for cooperation in the fields of environmental protection, the climate agenda and scientific research.
The delegation was particularly interested in CAIER’s long-standing work on the comprehensive study of the ecological state of the Caspian Sea. The institute’s experts presented the results of research focusing on the analysis of water quality, seabed sediments, microplastics, pollutants and the impact of anthropogenic factors on the Caspian ecosystem.
Representing CAIER at the meeting were Daulet Asylbaev, Managing Director; Adylkhan Tovasarov, Director of Science and Innovation; and Asem Syrlybay, Head of ESG Project Development.
Particular attention was paid to one of the institute’s priority areas of activity — investigating the causes of the decline in the Caspian seal population. For several years, CAIER’s specialists have been conducting scientific research, organising field expeditions and participating in comprehensive monitoring of the status of the Caspian Sea’s only marine mammal. The data collected provides a deeper understanding of the impact of environmental changes, pollution, climatic factors and other threats on the population of this rare species.
During the meeting, the institute’s staff also spoke about the large-scale scientific expeditions carried out by CAIER in various regions of Kazakhstan. These include comprehensive studies of the Caspian Sea ecosystem, expeditions to investigate the mass deaths of Caspian seals, projects to monitor air quality, study soils and water bodies, analyse industrial emissions, investigate biodiversity, activities in the field of efficient water use, and CAIER’s patented developments in the field of waste processing.
Representatives of the British Embassy praised CAIER’s contribution to the development of environmental science in Kazakhstan, emphasising the importance of independent research for making effective environmental decisions. The parties noted their mutual interest in further professional dialogue and the exchange of expertise on climate policy, biodiversity conservation and the sustainable management of natural resources.
