The first meeting of the Advisory Council on Environmental Issues and Sustainable Development was held in Almaty.
The event was attended by public figures and representatives of local organisations working in the field of ecology and sustainable development from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
The meeting was held at the Central Asian Institute for Environmental Research (CAIER).
The main focus of the Council's work will be to develop proposals for government agencies and the business community in the field of environmental safety in Central Asia.
The Advisory Council includes Asel Tasmagambetova, ecologist, founder of the Central Asian Institute for Environmental Research (CAIER), winner of the ‘SDG Pioneer 2024’ competition Mergen Kepbanov, Director of the Project Office of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia in Turkmenistan; Aizhan Chynybaeva, Founder of the Eco Demi Foundation, Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Norway, Ambassador for World Cleanup Day in Kyrgyzstan; Dalerjon Khojibaev, Candidate of Technical Sciences, Head of the Department of Ecology, GMIT (Tajikistan), Vadim Sokolov, Head of the IFSA Project Implementation Agency (Uzbekistan), Bakhrom Uzakov, World Bank Consultant on Information Systems and Water Resources Accounting, Erlan Zhumabaev, Director of the Project Office of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia in Kazakhstan, Honoured Ecologist of Kazakhstan, Oyture Anarbekov, Country Consortium Representative/Senior Technical Advisor at Caritas Switzerland in Uzbekistan.
The experts of the Advisory Council on Ecology and Sustainable Development will develop targeted programmes for government agencies and the business community in the areas of biodiversity conservation, waste management and rational use of water resources.
"The establishment of the Advisory Council on Ecology and Sustainable Development is a logical continuation of the long-standing research and educational work carried out systematically by the Central Asian Institute for Environmental Studies. Global warming, environmental pollution and the irrational use of natural and water resources are problems that require the attention and joint efforts of all Central Asian countries. The Advisory Council includes experts with extensive experience in addressing environmental issues. This will enable us to highlight and propose ways to solve environmental problems, taking into account the knowledge of our regional colleagues," said Assel Tasmagambetova, ecologist and chair of the Advisory Committee of the UN Global Compact in Central Asia in 2025.
In the future, the Advisory Council will be expanded to include representatives from all Caspian littoral states.
It is expected that representatives of the environmental community of the participating countries will be eligible to be elected as Chair of the Advisory Council.
