CAIER and KATKO discussed innovative waste processing technologies

A meeting with representatives of KATKO Joint Stock Company was held at the Central Asian Institute for Environmental Research (CAIER). The main topic of discussion was innovative approaches to industrial waste processing and opportunities for cooperation in this area.

KATKO was represented by Matthieu Riou (Plant Manager - Uranium Heap Leach), Jérôme Violet (Deputy Head of Drilling Department), Nicolas Fiet (Director technique mining industry), Yerkenaz Zholymbayeva (Project Manager) and Timur Meldeshov (Project Manager).

CAIER was represented by founder and ecologist Asel Tasmagambetova, CEO Adylkhan Tovasarov, Commercial Director Daulet Asylbaev, Research Project Coordinator Danila Uvarov and Head of ESG Lyazzat Kaibaldieva.

Asel Tasmagambetova opened the meeting by noting that CAIER has been conducting research and implementing projects in three key areas for more than 13 years: biodiversity conservation, efficient use of water resources, and waste management.

Since its foundation, the institute has been guided by the principles of sustainable development, and all projects are aimed at improving the environmental situation in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

CAIER holds the international LEED environmental standard certificate and, since 2023, has been a member of the UN Global Compact network, supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Director General Adylkhan Tovasarov presented the institute's own patented development — a technology for producing building materials from clay soils. CATCO participants expressed interest in this technology and the possibilities for its implementation at their enterprises. CATCO representatives also spoke about their existing waste disposal systems and the separate storage of liquid and solid production waste.

Research project coordinator Danila Uvarov presented the results of a joint project between CAIER and the Israeli company Mekorot aimed at conserving water resources in Almaty. He also spoke about CAIER's proprietary rainwater harvesting device, which reduces water consumption for domestic needs by 33%.

ESG Director Lyazzat Kaibaldieva shared CAIER's experience in ESG consulting. She cited the example of one of the institute's clients, which received high marks from an international rating agency after implementing a sustainable development policy developed by CAIER.

At the end of the meeting, Asel Tasmagambetova recalled CAIER's many years of work on studying and preserving the Caspian seal population. From 2017 to 2025, the institute conducted 10 international expeditions, the results of which became the basis for including the Caspian seal in the Red Book of Kazakhstan. The country's first Centre for the Study and Rehabilitation of Caspian Seals was established at CAIER in Aktau, where more than 50 animals have already been treated.

Following the meeting, the parties agreed to further discuss cooperation in the field of solid and liquid waste processing, as well as the possibility of conducting joint scientific research.
